Old Fashioned Apple Crisp

For the Apple Filling:

  • 6 cups apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (use a mix of sweet and tart varieties like Granny Smith and Honeycrisp)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

For the Crisp Topping:

  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, diced into small pieces

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9-inch baking dish or a similar size baking dish with butter or non-stick cooking spray.

  2. Prepare Apple Filling: In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss until the apples are evenly coated. Transfer the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it out evenly.

  3. Make Crisp Topping: In another bowl, mix together the rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, and salt. Add the diced cold butter and use your fingers or a pastry cutter to cut the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  4. Assemble and Bake: Sprinkle the crisp topping evenly over the apple filling in the baking dish.

  5. Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling.

  6. Cool and Serve: Remove the apple crisp from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving. Serve warm on its own or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream, if desired.
